Everybody, it seems, is fascinated by the secret world of spying and all of the spy gadgets that come with the intrigue of the covert world of the spy.
We see it all the time on the big screen, the small screen and in video games and books. There is a desire to find out what the latest Bond or Bourne hero is getting up to next and how he’s going to get himself out of danger armed with his latest arsenal of spy gadgets. We are lured into the spy world with tales of memory-loss tazers, secret cameras, pens which are guns in disguise and the deadliest of weapons which masquerade as everyday objects.
Most of us enjoy watching these spy gadgets brought to life in film because it just seems so fantastical to have all of these weird and wonderful devices to defeat the enemy. What most of us don’t know is that many spy gadgets are available to the public and can be yours to own for your personal use. Okay, so we aren’t talking about the deadly weapons necessarily, but certainly the hidden cameras, voice recorders and a whole host of other equipment can be yours with a few mouse clicks and a bit of spare cash.
And, it’s not as unusual to own a piece of spy equipment as you may think – after all, what do you think cctv systems are? These types of system are very much on show in front of house situations and to protect property, as most of us will have seen as some point or another. It’s the more covert of the spy gadgets that you might not be so aware of. Calculators with a hidden agenda, pens recording every sound in the room or maybe even hidden spy cameras moonlighting as a plug socket!
So, next time you’re in a meeting, having an interview or even browsing in a store, have a look round and see what measures they have taken to record events and protect their interests. Paranoid? Us???

Back in May, the Daily Telegraph reported on the number of Australian employers who are using spy equipment to monitor traders on their premises, such as plumbers, electricians and handymen. The tactics they employed were varied but most popular were the use of monitoring mobile phone records and using covert cameras to spy on their targets movements whilst doing their jobs.
This led to the Australian Worker’s Union launching their own campaign to prevent what they see as an invasion of privacy against workers during the working day. Their main claim is that workers should not be monitored whilst they are in their own vehicles travelling to and from work, and between jobs. It also included monitoring phone calls throughout the day, where the workers may be on their own time – for example, over a lunchtime or authorised break.
Nurseries were also using this cctv spy equipment to provide parents with peace of mind but the technology was then being used by nursery worker’s bosses to monitor their staff’s behaviour throughout the working day, which could be classed as an infringement of their working life.
The upshot of the whole affair is that employees are not feeling that they are trusted by their employers and employees are creating an environments of surveillance in the workplace. A happy medium needs to be reached by both parties  to ensure that employers are getting a productive working day from their staff and employees feel that they can be trusted to carry out their work.
