So the debate continues, and it’s the same debate that’s been going on before they even went into operation: how much difference will these cameras make?  Will our roads be safer?  Is it just another ‘Big Brother’ measure?

A report last month into the deaths of Captain Derek Furniss, aged 32, and Cadet David Jevens, aged just 22, found that their plane took a “rapid series of steep turns” as it flew through a narrow valley before crashing into a bog in County Galway.

A report from the Air Accident Investigation Unit found that the most likely cause of the air crash was “spatial disorientation”, which meant that the pilots believed their plane was upside down and was plummeting to the ground when, in actual fact, it was ascending. The investigation also found that the very changeable weather conditions and flying at a high speed in a mountainous area during reduced visibility were contributing factors to the crash.

Captain Furniss was from Rathfarnham in Dublin and had previously written about disorientation while still a cadet. Cadet Jevens, from Davidstown Glynn in County Wexford, was due to qualify as a pilot a matter of months after the fatal crash.

In a chronology of events, the two pilots set off at 4.20pm on October 12 for a training flight from West Dublin to Galway Airport in a Pilatus PC-9M training aircraft. Bad weather near Lough Mask on the Galway/Mayo border meant that the aircraft took an alternative route to Maum in County Galway. Just 30 minutes later, eyewitnesses saw the aircraft cross a ridge into the ‘narrow and steep-sided’ Crumlin Valley, before it began to undertake a rapid series of steep turns and climbs.

The cockpit digital voice recorder noted that alarms were activated to indicate that the aircraft was flying too low.  At this point Captain Furniss took control and 6 seconds later the voice recorder noted him as saying: “Bad decision now”.  Seconds later the recording was terminated and the men died after crashing into a hill.  Examination revealed that no technical faults were found with the aircraft, and that the accident was “not survivable”.

Her claim for sexual harassment and unfair dismissal against the unnamed agency included allegations that her married intelligence boss sent flirty text messages and touched her inappropriately during a nine-month period. She said she initially put this behaviour down to “being friendly”, but later changed her mind when he became more direct.

The woman, who is named only as ‘Miss D’, told the tribunal how her security clearance was downgraded after she sought treatment for depression as a result of alleged harassment. She stated: “I was blacklisted because I had been on a psych ward meaning I could never do restricted posts, sensitive posts again. No details have been revealed of Miss D’s position within the intelligence agency and whether or not she had access to sensitive spy equipment or information.

Cross-examiners suggested that Miss D had “manufactured” the allegations in a bid to move detract from her poor work performance, and also that she encouraged her boss to behave in the ways he did.

The case continues.

As if this wasn’t cool enough, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) recently made an accidental discovery when studying what happened to used and discarded electronic devices. Their project, named ‘Backtalk’ involved developing and implementing two technologies to allow electronics to ‘self-report’ their locations worldwide after they were tossed out. While in the process of carrying out this research, Backtalk’s lab was broken into and one of the laptops which was used to record images was stolen along with other equipment. However, all was not lost, because thanks to the new tracking technologies developed for the project, the laptop was not lost for long! Because the machine was equipped for image capturing, photos of the thieves were sent back to the Backtrack researchers, and the laptop’s GPS reported its precise location so that police could track it down. The idea that the development of some spy equipment in a lab somewhere could mean that burglary is eradicated is pretty ‘out there’, even for us!

So, this whole ‘Internet of Things’ sounds like happy news to most of us law-abiding citizens but it could also bring a level of guilt to us too. Critics have now accused the local authorities of playing spy games and using taxpayers’ money to infringe on people’s privacy.  One of the councils involved, Newham council, is one of the most deprived boroughs in London, and they alone spent more than £67,000 on three investigations into residents suspected of fraudulent activity in 2010.  It also spent £10,392 spying on a member of their own staff.

Another big offender was Croydon council, who spent nearly £18,000 spying on just three individuals who were claiming disability benefit in order to determine whether or not they really were disabled.  Bexley council weren’t much better, spending £200 in a search for a former employee who was suspected of stealing a staff car.

Barnet council also ran up a large bill of almost £14,000 while investigating two of its own employees who had made injury compensation claims against the local authority, and spying on three members of the public.

Details reveal that the nature of the surveillance and use of surveillance equipment would involve an agent watching an address from a distance, and on occasion following a suspect, and recording their findings.

This amazing technology has now raised privacy concerns after it emerged last week that the major shopping centre owner, Land Securities, have installed the spy equipment at ten of Britain’s biggest shopping malls, including Cabot Circus, Bristol; Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth; Princesshay, Exeter; Buchanan Galleries, Glasgow; Bon Accord & St Nicholas, Aberdeen; One New Change and New Street Square in Central London; Cardinal Place, Victoria; The Galleria, Hatfield; and The Centre, Livingston.

All that is in evidence of this new surveillance is a tiny yellow sign which can be found in Exeter’s Princesshay shopping centre which informs customers that their mobile phone signal is being ‘tracked’ by Footpath’s scanners.  There is no way in which to opt out, except by refusing to enter the shopping centre or turning off your mobile phone.

The company responsible for devloping the software, Path Intelligence, states that it does include safeguards in order to prevent spying on specific individuals, and confirms that no personal information on individuals is ever collected.  The purpose of this spy equipment is to track consumer’s movements throughout the mall and to better understand what shops and services they may find the most interesting or the most useful.

Nick Pickles of ‘Big Brother Watch’ says that the law needs to be tightened to for it to cope with new mobile phone tracking systems that are in place.  He states: “People are right to be worried that their mobile phones can be turned into tracking devices very easily, without their permission or knowledge.  While we have been given assurances that the FootPath technology is not capable of capturing personal information or sending communications to people’s phones, other technologies which would allow this are available.  Such tracking and communications would be a significant intrusion on privacy.”

Voice Recorders – The Vote-Off

Vartanian operated in Tehran during World War II, where he tracked German commandos who were attempting to attack a summit attended by leaders including Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill.  He also is responsible for infiltrating British intelligence and exposing a network of secret agents in the USSR – which he was able to do by getting himself accepted on a British training course for spies based in Tehran.

Vartanian’s wife was also a Soviet spy and they worked as a spying duo for over thirty years in total.  He originally became an agent in 1940, aged just sixteen, and worked under the codename ‘Amir’.  He was tasked with uncovering both British and German spies.

Regarding the summit operation, Vartanian was able to use spy equipment in Tehran to track down German agents, including the field station chief Franz Meyer.  Franz then went missing and was later found, bizarrely, working as a grave-digger at an Armenian cemetery.

It is reported that in the two years between 1940 and 1941, Vartanian and his fellow agents exposed up to 400 people who were linked to German intelligence.  In a radio interview some years ago, Vartanian reflected on his 45 years in the espionage business and said: “We were lucky – we never met a single traitor.  For us, underground agents, betrayal is the worst evil.  If an agent observes all the security rules and behaves properly in society, no counter-intelligence will spot him or her. Like sappers, underground agents err only once.”

The organisation says that the campaign activities of their candidate, Tsai Ing-wen, have been subjected to illegal snooping by the use of surveillance equipment.  The vote is due to go ahead tomorrow and early polls suggest that it will be a very close call between Ms Tsai and the President, Ma Ying-jeou.

The two agencies who are involved in the accusations are the National Security Council and the Intelligence Bureau.  Both have issued separate statements stating that it is common practice for them to monitor candidates’ activities during the elections in order to ensure their safety. They claim that none of the information they collated was passed on to President Ma.

Allegations were initially raised last week by a national magazine, Next, which broadcast that the National Security Council Secretary, General Hu Wei-chen, had instructed various justice ministry investigators to use surveillance equipment to monitor Ms Tsai’s activities back in May of last year, after she became a presidential candidate.  Next magazine then published the names of more than 20 justice ministry officials it claimed were involved in the surveillance operation.

Both the National Security Council and the Intelligence Bureau have not yet explained why they allegedly gathered information about the potential votes Ms Tsai was due to receive from her supporters.  Meanwhile, the president has denied all of the allegations and his campaign spokesman has stated that the claims were “without evidence and irresponsible”.

It is still not clear whether or not an investigation will be taking place but we’ll keep you updated with all of the latest on this story.

Amir Mirzaei Hekmati (the accused) was born in America but his family are of Iranian origin, and he has been found guilty of “co-operating with a hostile nation, membership of the CIA and trying to implicate Iran in terrorism”. He originally went on trial late last year after being accused of being on a mission to infiltrate the Islamic Republic’s intelligence service.

Hekmati, aged just 28, was forbidden proper legal representation throughout the trial. Hekmati’s college professor father stated that his son was in no way a CIA spy and had simply been visiting family in Iran when he was arrested last Summer. He also stated that Hekmati was coerced into making a false confession when he appeared on a state TV broadcast after Christmas.

The US government are now demanding the immediate release of the prisoner as they have seen no evidence of spying or the use or possession of spy gadgets in this case.  Hekmati now has 20 days to appeal under Iranian law.

Also make sure any outbuildings such as garages and sheds are locked (especially if they contain ladders and tools – this means the thieves won’t even have to bring their own supplies with them!) Lock any garden gates – buy a padlock if necessary. It goes without saying that you should lock any doors and windows securely and put the keys away safely, and away from the view of windows.

As well as these basic security measures, you could also invest in some spy equipment that will help to deter any burglars.  ‘Spy equipment’ might sound a bit ‘James Bond’ but more and more homeowners are turning to covert surveillance equipment to protect their homes while they are away on holiday.  Items to think about are motion detector security lighting or a CCTV setup for the perimeter of your home (you will need to ensure that the cameras are covering only your property and no public areas or walkways).  Also think about installing or upgrading your alarm system or investing in a safe for your valuables.

Lastly, don’t close all of your curtains as this simply tells someone who is watching your house that you aren’t home and won’t be for a while yet!  If you can get someone to go and open and close the curtains then this is the best option.  Also, remember to cancel any deliveries such as milk and newspapers and delay any courier deliveries if you can.  Security timer light switches are also a good idea and one of the most popular ways to create the illusion of someone being at home.

So, wherever you decide to go to escape this dull January, make sure that your home is secure before you leave and you can relax on the knowledge that you’ve done all you can to protect your home while you aree away.

Japan sent the satellite into space from Tanegashima which is a southern island, and the launch has been heralded as a complete success with the radar-equipped satellite functioning as expected.

The Japanese government have not released any details with regard to the equipment, it’s purpose and what it may be capable of, but it is thought that the satellite will be able to provide data of what is happening on the ground in darkness or through cloud cover.

This was Japan’s second launch of last year, following the first lift-off in September.  In total, it is the seventh launch the country has done since 2003, and a further launch is planned for this year.

There has always been concern of the nature of these satellites as glorified covert technology and spy equipment in Japan is of particular concern to their neighbours and other governments around the globe.

The recession puts lots of financial pressure on both business owners and their employees, and the temptation to commit fraud has never been higher.  There are many ways of committing fraud but the most common ways are through the exaggeration of profits, simply stealing funds or making false insurance claims to get a quick payout.  If you are a business owner with staff on the books, there are some simple ways in which you can protect your company from fraud.

Do you have total control over the finances in your business?  Perhaps you have a trusted accountant or admin person who takes care of the money on your behalf.  There’s nothing wrong with this but withdrawals and deposits should always be double checked by you – if not every day then certainly on a regular basis.

Something else to watch out for is fraud via a method of poaching.  Your business will undoubtedly have some information which we be valuable to others – whether in the form of your finance details, client lists, names and addresses of suppliers, or even your own personal details.  Before working with anybody that you do not know personally, check them out thoroughly first.  This also rings true for new employees – Twitter and Facebook are amazing resources for this kind of thing!

If you have reason to believe that something dodgy may be going on right under your nose, it’s time to invest in some surveillance equipment for your place of work.  Whether is be voice recorders placed around the office or computer monitoring devices on employee’s PCs, you need to do whatever you need to in order to protect your business.  Other surveillance equipment includes common security measures such as CCTV systems and alarms and locks.

You should view the security of your business as a priority, and do all that you can to safeguard it.

First and foremost (and if you are able) make sure that the stalker knows that you want nothing to do with them and their behaviour is unacceptable to you.  Threats can often make the situation worse so simply let it be known firmly and seriously that you don’t like this behaviour from them.  It is also very important that you let those close to you know about the problem person and this is for two reasons.  First, it gives you more evidence for your case as others will be able to back up what you are saying.  Friends and family may even witness the stalker while spending time with you.

The more people that know, the better.  Second, as well as being aware of the problem, they may be able to help or deter the stalker.  They are an extra pair of eyes for you so never underestimate the power of people in numbers.  Also, tell the police and get a crime number so that they can start to log the behaviour.  Phone your local station with your crime number every time there is an incident and they will log it against your case.  You can also keep a diary to log when incidents occur for your own records and this will back up the police statement and help you to recall key timings and facts if the case ever comes to court.

If you are the victim of ‘cyber stalking’ or any sort of electronic stalking, do all that you can to change email address, phone numbers, etc, as this will make it harder for the stalker to contact you.  Turning off your Facebook profile for a few weeks is a small price to pay for piece of mind.  This is also where the technology will work for you as you can invest in computer monitoring equipment to record any emails sent to you, a mobile recording device to monitor your mobile phone and even a voice recorder if you are receiving phones calls so that you can record details of the conversations.  You can buy a voice recorder which is small enough to fit into your pocket so you can record any direct confrontation too, if this is the form that the stalking takes.

Most importantly, keep all evidence safe as it will often be a case of your word against the stalkers and you will need to prove what has been happening to you.  A voice recorder and some common sense will go a long way to proving your case.

The man (said to be of Iranian origin) is reported to have received sophisticated intelligence, but it is not clear whether the man was caught in possession on spy gadgets or was in the process of carrying out any specific spy surveillance when he was caught.  In fact very little is known about the man or the circumstances if his arrest by the Iranian police.  In fact, American officials have gone so far as to indicate to the BBC that they reject the claims that anyone has been arrested in the first place.

The Iranian intelligence ministry have issued a statement on the alleged spy, which was broadcast just before Christmas across their television networks.  It claims:  “This CIA agent of Iranian nationality began his mission after receiving training in weapons use.  But he was identified by Iranian intelligence agents and his espionage missions were revealed.”  The spy was not named in the broadcast.

This is not the first time that Iran have cried wolf over spy claims against the United States.  There have been a few occasions where Iran has announced arrests of alleged American spies, and the use of spy gadgets against their country, but have provided little or no information to substantiate the claims.  In May of last year, Tehran announced that they had detained a network of thirty CIA agents and claimed that the US had offered visas and residency to educated Iranians in exchange for information on Iran’s nuclear and defence capabilities.  Then, on December 13th, Iran made a statement saying that they had indicted fifteen people on charges of spying for America and Israel, but again gave few other details.

Who knows whether there have been actual arrests, or indeed whether agents are being held for crimes against the country.  For such a secretive and deceptive nation it remains their word against the world and there is little that can be done about that.

The star of the Mission: Impossible franchise is said to be on the lookout for an action-packed script, choc-a-block with spy equipment that would suit both him and Beckham down to the ground.  In a statement he said:  “I’d love to do action movies with Beckham. He would be great, he could kick ass. David would have to teach me to play soccer first.”

This month, Cruise was in London for the UK premiere of the latest Mission Impossible installment – Ghost Protocol.  At the premier, he claimed that Ethan Hunt is far superior than both James Bond and Jason Bourne.  He was asked who out of the three is the better spy hero, and responded:  “Of course it’s Ethan. I don’t know what to say, I love Bond and I love Bourne but, Ethan’s different you know? It’s a different experience. We have the gadgets, and you know, I do make the ‘Mission’ films!”

We shall have to wait and see whether a Beckham/Cruise partnership comes good – the question is, would Beckham partner up with Cruise as a dynamic duo, or would Beckham be cast at the new villain of Hollywood?  Football-inspired spy equipment perhaps? Will Victoria get a leading role as a Bond girl?  Watch this space…

First on the list in Brompton Oratory in Kensington.  At the height of the Cold War there were hundreds of Russian spies operating in London and the capital was the ideal setting for agents to engage in spy activity, transferring packages to each other without anyone ever noticing.  Dead letter dropping was the norm and one of the most prolific places for this to happen was Brompton Oratory, an Italian Catholic church on Brompton Road.  Spies would attend the church and leave documents and microfilm in a secure location, to be retrieved by their KGB handlers.  The location of this spy setting is ideal due to its narrow winding lanes and close proximity to the Russian Embassy.

The Millennium Hotel on Grosvenor Square s up next as it was the setting for the Litvinenko assassination which we have featured before on this blog.  It was here that the spy enjoyed a spot of tea – and was poisoned.

296-302 Borough High Street is the next venue on our list of where to gain a history of spy equipment in London.  And we couldn;t do this without included a bit of education content – so here we have it, a bonafide spy school!  In the last decade there existed such a thing opposite Southwark police station on Borough High Street in an old MOD building.  It was officially known as a ‘non-field training headquarters’ and agents would learn spy techniques to use in their work.

Café Daquise, London’d first Polish restaurant is the unofficial headquarters of Edward Raczynski (Polish President-in-Exile).  Café Daquise was also the setting for spies to meet, and was close to the Russian embassy, much like Brompton Oratory.  One famous rendezvous that took place here was between Christine Keeler (call girl at the centre of the Profumo affair) and her handler/lover, Yevgeny Ivanov (senior naval attaché at the Russian Embassy).  The affair eventually caused Profumo to resign and also affected the health of then Prime Minister Harold MacMillan.
