Fogle, who was accused by Russia of being a spy, has now left the country.  Footage was released over the weekend of the US diplomat passing through security at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow.  Fogle was ordered to leave Russia last week after initial accusations of attempting to recruit Russian intelligence officers as spies.

Litvinenko Poisoning Saga Continues

The widow of Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko has called for an inquest into his death to be cancelled, and for a public inquiry to take place instead.  Litvinenko’s wife Maria is convinced that it is the only way in which the mystery surrounding his death will be uncovered.  Litvinenko was poisoned through contact with radioactive polonium in London seven years ago.  Although the use of different forms of spy equipment by the Russians is not unheard of, the use of polonium was so shocking – as were photos of Litvinenko on his death bed – that the whole nation was gripped by this story of espionage and dodgy dealings in the spy underworld.

Two men were executed in Iran on Sunday, convicted of working for rival government spy agencies.  Mohammad Heidari and Kourosh Ahmadi were hanged at dawn after being accused of spying and being undercover agents.  In the official court report, there were no details about when the pair were arrested nor when their trial took place (assuming a trial took place at all).

The widow of the former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko has called for the upcoming inquest into his death to be abandoned and replaced with a public inquiry.

Marina Litvinenko said it was the only way to establish the truth about the death of her husband, who was poisoned with radioactive polonium in London in 2006.

The coroner has ruled that the inquest could not take evidence on possible Russian state involvement, citing national security.

Weekend Spy Story Catch-Up

Neatly packaged, and with full instructions,  this looks good to go and I’m excited about trying it out on my unsuspecting family!  This fantastic voice recorder look exactly like a normal writing pen and has a nice weighed feel of a quality writing implement, as opposed to those cheap plasticky ones.  Just checking…it does actually write too – bonus!

Trying it out, first upon my mum who is ranting on the phone no doubt to some poor relative, I manage to record the whole of her conversation by leaving the pen by the notepad which she keeps by the phone.  I manage to learn all about the neighbourly goings-on, and mum even used the pen to write down a date she’s been given for an upcoming family event – I stifle a giggle at this.

Next up is my married older brother who has popped by for the evening to scoff mum’s food as his wife is out at the gym and mum’s cooking is the easier alternative to actually making his own food.  I tuck the pen behind my ear and proceed to ask him if my lovely sister-in-law knows he’s cheating by not cooking himself.  He smugly tells me no, and that if I tell her, he’ll simply deny everything.  I retrieve the pen from behind my ear, point it in his direction and tell him “mum’s the word”!

Dad’s up next, but there’s some rather dull ramblings in front of the footy so I leave the pen on the side and decide to partake in some of mum’s offerings from the kitchen.  Dad walks in ten minutes later and I have to check twice before I realise that’s my pen voice recorded poking out of his shirt pocket.  Seems like it was a bit too nice to be leaving around after all…

Spy Glasses – Does It Get Any Cooler Than That!

The Islamist Hamas government is planning to weed out informants among them in a campaign to uncover covert agents working in their midst.  Secret tip-offs in the past have aided Israel in planning air strikes – and Hamas want to put an end to the secret information sharing – and they have sever ways of dealing with those that they find.  Last November, seven suspected spies were executed in the street by Hamas – with one dead body even being tied onto the back of a motorbike and dragged through the Gaza streets.  This latest campaign however, pledges to treat those who surrender of their own volition far more gently.  But this action poses its own problems, as those who have turned themselves over to Hamas in the past have been punished by their own communities.

Since taking power back in 2007, Hamas have executed a total of fourteen people-to-date, which includes six convicted spies.  They have also vocally expressed the right to execute more spies in future as they see fit.

Moving onto our next story, Australian-Israeli Mossad agent Ben Zygier unwittingly managed to sabotage a top secret spy operation aimed at bringing home the bodies of Israeli soldiers missing in Lebanon, a report has now revealed.

The abandoned mission would have meant closure on a decades0old campaign for the return of the remains of three soldiers who were captured and killed by Syrian forces during Israel’s invasion of Lebanon back in 1982.  The men – identified as Zachary Baumel, Yehuda Katz and Tzvi Feldman – died in Lebanon’s Bekka Valley, and recovering the remains of soldiers killed in action is always of extreme national importance to the country involved..

It is reported that the unpredictable actions of Zygier led to the arrest of the man in charge of ensuring the remains were returned home, hence the moving of the bodies was interrupted and never reached their intended destination.

Do You Have Your Suspicions?

Singh, aged 49, was attacked by fellow inmates with bricks last week in Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore.  The inmates had been released from their cells for a one hour break at the time the incident occurred.  He then fell into a coma and died yesterday morning at Jinnah hospital, also in Lahore.

He was sentenced to death sixteen years ago on espionage charges.  Singh was accused over spying and his involvement in the 1990 bomb attacks in Lahore and Faisalabad, which killed 14 people.  His family have denied the spy charges against him, saying that he had simply strayed into Pakistan territory by mistake, and it was a case of mistaken identity.  There were many protests and appeals for his release – or at the very least a transfer back to India – as worries were raised about his safety in a Pakistan prison.  While under the prison’s care, Singh had sustained a few serious injuries, one of which was a fractured skull.

Singh’s wife, sister, and daughters had visited him in hospital while he was in the coma, but he sadly did not recover and dies just hours after their visit.

Two inmates at the prison are now charged with murder, and two jail officials have been suspended.

Voice Recorders Covered In New Report

Cuba – former American government employee Marta Velazquez has been accused of recruiting fellow American citizens to go and spy for the Cuban government.  She is accused of passing documents and information onto Cuban intelligence officials relating to matters of American national defence.  Velazquex worked as a federal employee in the state department’s development arm where she had top-security clearance.

Israel – Israel will not be pressing charges over the prison suicide of a disgraced Mossad spy from Australia.  Ben Zygier hanged himself in his prison cell while the jailer responsible for watching surveillance screen was away from his desk.  Zygier was a secret agent for the Mossad intelligence agency and had shared top secret information about Lebanese informants.

Venezuela – An American filmmaker arrested in Venezuela is under suspicion of being a spy.  Timothy Tracy has been detained near Caracas amidst an air of secrecy.  According to recent media reports, Tracy is a filmmaker who is based in Hollywood, and has been working on a documentary for the past year or so.  Caracas had assumed that Tracy was part of an intelligence organization because of his training and his ability to infiltrate and handle sources and security information.

Spy Equipment For Your Mobile Phone

A released study which was dated last month by the Defence Intelligence Agency is the first time that the spy agency has reached such a conclusion and illustrated the high stakes surrounding the escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula.  The report was entitled: Dynamic Threat Assessment 8099: North Korea Nuclear Weapons Program (March 2013).  The conclusion was made public by Representative Doug Lamborn as he questioned senior Pentagon officials about North Korea’s nuclear weapons program during a hearing of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee.  Quoting from the study, Lamborn said: “DIA assesses with moderate confidence the North currently has nuclear weapons capable of delivery by ballistic missiles, however the reliability will be low.”  Lamborn said the agency reached the conclusion in a mostly classified March 2013 report. He did not say what range the nuclear-capable North Korean missiles might have.

A U.S. official later said that the quotation cited by Lamborn was in a section of the study that had been erroneously marked “unclassified”.  The official said Lamborn had done nothing wrong in releasing the statement, but declined any further comment on the study.

Experts inside and outside the U.S. government disagree over the extent to which North Korea has been able to design and build their serious spy gadgets in the form of nuclear devices – which would be small enough to serve as a missile warhead.  Some believe the North Koreans are able to build a device which would fit aboard older-model missiles of intermediate range.  Other experts question this assessment.  The main consensus inside the U.S. government is that North Korea does not yet have a nuclear device that would fit longer-range missiles which conceivably could reach U.S. territories.  Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel, answering questions at the same hearing, said he did not believe Iran nor North Korea had the “capacity right now” to hit the United States with a long-range missile carrying either a nuclear or conventional warhead.  U.S. officials believe North Korean missiles have the range to reach Guam, a U.S. territory in the Pacific, and the U.S. states of Hawaii and Alaska but not the mainland.

While North Korea has conducted underground nuclear tests, it is not clear whether it has been able to reduce the size of the device to the point where it could be mounted on a short- or long-range ballistic missile.  This is spy technology in the extreme guys, but should we really “assume” North Korea to be less a threat?  World stability is just about holding up along with Iran’s technological capabilities, Al Qaeda’s relentlessness to bring World instability, the EU’s ongoing crisis, the separate beliefs of other terrorist organisations to turmoil countries to wasteland and the lack of co-operation between intelligence forces from different countries.

Spy Gadgets Get Serious: The Nuclear Missile

Hawk-Eye’s system will use seven hidden spy cameras to track the precise movement of the football, which then sends a signal to the match officials’ watches within a single second if the ball crosses the goal-line.  The amazing new technology will now be installed at all Premier League grounds.  The Football Association also intends to install a start-of-the-art system at Wembley Stadium in time for the traditional season-opener.  Hawk-Eye – which was bought by Sony in 2011 – already provides the ball-tracking systems for tennis and cricket matches.

An official statement was released on the Premier League’s website saying:  “The Premier League is pleased to announce that it has awarded Hawk-Eye, the world’s leading provider of vision processing instruments to sport, the contract to provide goal-line technology systems across its 20 member clubs and all 380 Barclays Premier League matches.  The outdoor camera-based system will be installed during the close season ready for use on the opening weekend of the 2013/14 Barclays Premier League season – Saturday 17 August.  This will be the first time that goal-line technology is used in any domestic competition.”  The Premier League is the first of Europe’s major leagues to introduce the technology.

Richard Scudamore, Premier League chief executive, said that he was keen to see Hawk-Eye replays of contentious decisions relayed to fans during matches:  “The fact it was a camera-based system was critical.  Replays will be made available to all our host broadcasters and we are examining the feasibility of them being used on in-stadium big-screens.  It is essential that fans see the system in action to know that it is working.”

Hawk-Eye’s inventor, Paul Hawkins, said:  “We understand the responsibility that we have been given and that the real challenge lies ahead in consistently delivering the technology that football deserves.”

The arrival of the hidden cameras will mark the biggest change in English football since the back-pass rule was introduced in 1992, which prevents goalkeepers from picking up passes from team-mates.  Roy Hodgson said:  “It’s probably one of those moments that will go down with the changes to the offside rule and the back-pass rule, which most of us at the time were very sceptical about, but which we’ve now taken to our hearts because we appreciate it and it has speeded the game up.”

Purchasing Voice Recorders Online

The suicide bomber hid explosives in his underwear and posed as a Taliban peace envoy in order to wound National Directorate of Security chief Asadullah Khalid at a guest house run by the intelligence agency in Kabul back in December of last year.  Based on the witness evidence of a man who survived the bombing attack, it appears that the bomber was only about a metre away from the spy chief when he detonated the explosives.  The bomber, who died in the attack, was eating in the guesthouse when Khalid entered the room and blew himself up after Khalid answered his mobile.

The fact that an assassin was able to get so close to one of Afghanistan’s most prominent officials raised questions about whether the visitor was an insider known to Khalid.  And the revelation that the explosives were hidden in his underwear also suggested that he was not thoroughly searched.  Searches for hidden devices such as new spy gadget equipment and explosives are not generally carried out in intimate areas of the body in this area of the country.

The Afghanistan spy agency released a statement on Wednesday declaring: “The enemies of peace and security attacked the director in a strike that failed and he was taken for treatment first inside and then outside the country.  Finally after around four months of treatment, with the help of God, today at around 8.30 am, he returned home with good health.”  Large posters and banners bearing photographs of Khalid were erected on main roads in Kabul to welcome him home.

Khalid, known for being a fierce anti-Taliban figure and close to President Hamid Karzai, had only been in the job for a couple of months before the bombing.  He was treated at a US-run military hospital at Bagram airbase outside Kabul before being flown for treatment in Washington DC, where he was visited by both Karzai and US President Barack Obama.  Karzai said the attack was planned in neighbouring Pakistan, an accusation that Islamabad rejected.

Afghan Spy Chief Returns Home

We have all received nuisance calls at one time or another, whether it was a fictitious ‘PPI’ sales call, double glazing or even threatening calls.  None of these are welcome, and if it is starting to become excessive or distressing, we can help provide spy technology for your handset in order to put a stop to this.  Recently, a consumer group is calling for a clampdown on nuisance calls and text messages, claiming 70% of people have received one in the last three months.

Which?  said that more could be done under existing laws to stop people being “bombarded” with messages.  The group said that the contact was dominated by sales calls about financial services products which are the most common form of nuisance contact.  One regulator said it was sending out penalty notices to firms responsible for thousands of texts.

Which?  said that more than half of “nuisance” calls were about services such as personal injury or payment protection insurance (PPI) claims.  Consumer groups have called on the regulators – such as the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the Ministry of Justice, and the Office of Fair Trading – to issue fines or withdraw licences of those firms which broke the rules.  Such rules include contacting people who have opted out of marketing calls.

It also wants insurers and other companies to make it clear to consumers how they intend to use their data. “Unwanted calls or texts are not just a nuisance, they can be intrusive and distressing,” said Richard Lloyd, executive director of Which?  He went on to say “We want the regulators to work together to properly police and punish those responsible for unwanted calls and texts, using the existing law.  If they are unwilling or unable to enforce the rules, the government should step in. ” The ICO, which now has powers to issue penalties of up to £500,000, said: “We are continuing to clampdown on rogue marketing companies who pester the public with unsolicited marketing calls and texts and are currently chasing up leads and investigating complaints to identify those responsible.”

But there are also many issues regarding a malicious or abusive call, as well as silent calls which very little is done to stop this.  An Ofcom spokeswoman said: “Ofcom has powers to take enforcement action against companies who breach rules on silent and abandoned calls and we take this issue extremely seriously. “Malicious, abusive or threatening calls, whether from people you know or from strangers, are a criminal offence.  If you receive such a call you should immediately call your phone company and ask for their nuisance or malicious calls team.  It doesn’t matter whether you know the caller’s identity or not.  Simply tell them what the caller said.

In some cases, particularly if the caller is threatening, your phone company will advise you to call the police.  You may be offered ‘anonymous call rejection’ from your provider which may prevent these kinds of calls in the future (ask your provider if there’s a charge for this service).  Although this may stop abusive or threatening calls, you should be aware that such services may also block some calls you might want to continue receiving, such as some calls from overseas.  If the caller is making direct threats to you or your family and you believe those threats to be real and immediate, you must call 999 straight away however if you believe that the threats made are not immediate, then you should call your local police station (101 from any landline or mobile phone).

Spy Chief Sir Jonathan Evans was the director general of the domestic intelligence service, and presided over an expansion anti-terrorism operations in the wake of the 2005 London bombings.  He was charged with directing international counter-terrorism operations just ten days before the September 11 attacks in the US.  Just last year he warned that Al Qaeda militants were using the countries which toppled their leaders in the Arab Spring protests as bases to train radical Western youths for potential attacks on Britain.  Given the formidable task of helping secure the 2012 Olympics, the first Games hosted by a prominent partner in the US-led coalition formed after the September 11 attacks, Evans helped keep the Games safe with a light touch.

Home secretary Theresa May said after the announcement:  “He has experienced the service evolving over the years and as director general has led the service through particularly challenging times of change and unrest, including the aftermath of the 7/7 bombings.  I would like to pay tribute to Sir Jonathan for the 33 years he has dedicated to the service.  His tireless work helped ensure the delivery of a safe and successful Olympic and Paralympic Games last year.  I commend and thank him for his invaluable contribution to public safety and national security.”

A successor has not yet been announced, though local media have reported one of Evans’s deputies who commands counter-terrorism operations could very well be appointed.  MI5 chiefs typically serve for a five year duration.  MI5 employs about 3,800 people – up from 1,800 at the time of the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York.

The new guy (or gal!) is likely to have a baptism of fire, with their first big test is likely to be the Group of Eight meeting held in Northern Ireland this coming June.  An earlier G8 summit – held in Scotland in 2005 – was overshadowed by the July 7 bombings in London.  The successor will also have to contend with cost-cutting and public complacency about the threat from militants – who security officials say have hatched at least one major plot a year since the 9/11 American attacks.

The proof is definitely in the pudding, as there were no major attacks on Evans’ five-year watch.

MI5 Spy Chief Steps Down

February saw the launch of ‘Safer Internet Day’, raising awareness of cyber bullying – particularly with children.  Children’s Minister Edward Timpson explained that, “One of the things we see occurring which didn’t happen in my day is cyber bullying, bullying is bad enough in itself, but with cyber bullying there is no escape.  You can’t hide in a room”.

Students from schools across the country have helped come up with a charter to help keep children safe online;

3. I should be able to access films, music and TV online, but it is my responsibility to respect copyright law

7. I should be able to manage who can see the content I post online

8. The websites I use should have an easy and effective way of reporting

9. I should know what I can and can’t do online and understand the legal and offline consequences

10. I should be educated about staying safe online

Mr Timpson said it was important for young people and parents to be aware of the risks of going online and therefore take all the necessary precautions.  He also said it was important to “understand the power of the internet in a positive way and also that it can have the potential to have a negative impact”.

He also agreed that a child is never too young to have their internet use monitored.  Tablets are now available for children as young as pre-school age, and therefore it is important to ensure their safety, but without compromising their education and enjoyment.  We live in a society where our lives are dominated by online use – whether it be gaming, socialising or learning.

“It’s really important that not only do you take responsibility in the home both online and offline for your children’s safety but that you take the time to explain why you’re doing it,” Mr Timpson said.

Many children, who attended the awareness day in London, explained that they used lots of networking sites, but tried to make sure they had the correct privacy settings.  They felt that people ‘hid’ behind their laptops and computers.  Many people use their computers as a shield to mask what they’re doing or how they are feeling.  Often it gives them a sense of invincibility.  There is nothing wrong with being better able to express yourself online, unless this becomes a problem.  And when a young person or anyone for that matter is subject to humiliation or abuse on a public networking format, then it becomes an issue.

Spy Thriller Comes To Bath

Matthew Landells, aged 24, was acquitted of perverting the course of justice and assault after a Tees-side Crown Court trial last week.  A jury could not reach a verdict on a charge of rape, and prosecutors asked for seven days to decide whether a retrial should be sought.  In the interim the victim confronted the perpetrator and got his confession on a voice recorder she had hidden on her person.

Rapist Caught By Voice Recorder

Nancy Wake, who died two years ago at the age of 98, had asked for her ashes to be scattered in a forest near the village of Verneix.  A professional spy and saboteur, much of her work for the French resistance had been carried out in that area of France, hence her request for her ashes to be returned there after her death.

Wake was born in New Zealand in 1912, but raised in Australia.  She travelled to Europe to study journalism at the age of 16, and it was whilst covering the rise of Adolf Hitler for the Chicago Tribune in 1933 that she vowed to fight against the persecution of Jews.  In 1938, she married French businessman Henri Fiocca and moved to Marseille, France.  When the war broke out, Wake became a courier, saboteur and spy for the resistance, nicknamed the white mouse by the Nazis for the ease with which she escaped their attentions!

At one point in time she was the Gestapo’s most wanted fugitive, with a price of five million francs on her head!  She was eventually betrayed in 1943, and was forced to flee her home and her husband.  Her husband, who had refused to give her up, was tortured and killed by the Gestapo as a result.

Wake made her way to London where she was trained by the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in the use of military surveillance equipment and new spy gadget equipment.  She was parachuted back into France in April 1944 to co-ordinate 7,000 resistance fighters in attacks on German positions near Verneix.

Wake was Australia’s most decorated servicewoman of WWII, awarded the George medal by Britain and the Médaille de la Résistance, three Croix de Guerres and the Légion d’honneur by France.  Australia was represented at the ashes-scattering ceremony by Brigadier Bill Sowry, the head of Australian Defence staff in London.  He said at the service:  “We are here today to pass on our respects, to give her the respect she deserves.  It’s great the people of Verneix have done so much to recognise her and make this little part of France part of Australia as well.”

Computer technology and surveillance equipment in the mainstream modern world is evolving so quickly that it is becoming harder than ever for security experts to keep up with tackling the issues.  James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, said: “In some cases, the world is applying digital technologies faster than our ability to understand the security implications and mitigate potential risks.”

Earlier this week White House national security adviser Tom Donilon said that the issue is a growing challenge to economic relations between the United States and China.  China has responded by saying that it was willing to meet Donilon’s request that Beijing talk with the United States more on cyber security.

Earlier this year an un-named private American computer security company issued a study accusing a secretive Chinese military unit of being behind hacking attacks on a wide range of American industries.  China has gone on to deny such reports, and says that they themselves have been a victim of cyber spying by the American government!  The annual economic loss from cyber attacks is estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars.

Generally, cyber attacks on private companies and the use of spy equipment in the United States – particularly targeted at the banking sector – were getting worse.  It is predicted that the intensity and number of attacks will grow significantly throughout the year.  The military are now enhancing their cyber team, adding troops from across the military as well as civilians.  There are three teams planned to combat the ever-growing threat: a Cyber National Mission force which will deploy teams to defend against national-level threats; a Cyber Combat Mission force in charge of operational control; and a Cyber Protection force which will defend the military’s information systems.  It is expected these teams will be in place by the end of 2015, and that one third of them are planned to be in place by September this year.

But this isn’t the only issue that the US intelligence agencies are facing, as they are also dealing with cutbacks to their budgets too.  Due to the latest funding cutbacks it is anticiptaed that 5,000 intelligence contractors could be terminated, cyber security efforts could be affected, and older overhead intelligence collection systems such as spy satellites could face cutbacks also.

Voice Recorder Accessories: Recording Lead

Stephen Webber, aged 41, convinced his model victim Laura Chapman that she was about to be recruited by the security services.  He told the 26-year-old that her life was in danger, and that she had to go on the run with him to avoid assassination at the hands of a Russian hitman.  Webber also told his terrified captive that they had both been infected by a deadly virus.

She became so convinced by his lies that she even wrote a goodbye note to her family.  The couple spent five days moving from hotel to hotel along the south coast before they were eventually discovered by police in woods near Eastbourne.

Webber has now been found guilty of kidnap, causing grievous bodily harm, making threats to kill and criminal damage, following a nine day trial at Hove Crown Court.  The jury heard how Webber had befriended the young girl when she contacted last July him about the possibility of furthering her modelling career.  The court heard that Webber had been intelligent and plausible, and had managed to convince Miss Chapman that he was a secret agent working for MI5.  She was made to watch episodes of the BBC spy series, Spooks as part of Webber’straining.  He also blindfolded her and tied her to a chair in what he claimed was an interrogation room of a safe house, but what was in fact his friend’s house in Portslade, East Sussex.  Webber often spoke to imaginary contacts on the phone, pretending to discuss the details of his missions, new spy gadget equipment, and secret agents tailing him.

Over the following six days he took her to a string of hotels along the south coast telling her increasingly elaborate lies which left her believing her life was genuinely in danger.  He talked about ‘shooting to kill’.  He also collapsed on the ground in shock on hearing that colleagues had been killed.  His victim was terrified.  He took her phone and bank card to stay in  total control.

The pair were eventually tracked down to woods outside Eastbourne and Miss Chapman’s first words to officers who approached them were: “Are you police?  Am I safe?  Why have you not found me until now?  I haven’t slept for five days.”

In sentencing Webber, His Honour Judge Peter De-Mille described him as “manipulative” and “a danger to the public, especially women”.  Webber was sentenced to nine years imprisonment for each of the kidnap, threats and grievous bodily harm offences, all to run concurrently, and to six months for the criminal damage offence to run concurrently.  Detective Inspector Mick Jones said: “Stephen Webber is clearly a dangerous individual whose deceit and manipulation led a vulnerable young woman into believing that he was a spy for MI5 and that they were both in life threatening danger.

This led to the victim being too frightened to leave him over a five day period in which they travelled to Eastbourne, staying in local accommodation whilst their alleged pursuers hunted for them.  The victim was so fearful of the situation presented by Webber that she was too afraid to attempt to escape.  This led to the victim writing a goodbye note to her family as she feared that she would be killed at any time.  The courage of the victim in giving evidence in this case is worthy of tribute.  The defendant by pleading not guilty put the victim through the trauma of re-Iiving her ordeal but she knew she had to in order to get justice and in doing so protect others from Webber.”
