Yes, we love the movie version of events, but what actually happens in a real life interrogation?  Is it identical to what we see on the screen and simply the process of questioning people until they slip up or break down and confess?

The proper method of interrogation is where an authoritative person – for instance a police officer – will question a suspect in order to obtain information from them.  Usually this is a confession to a crime of some sort, but interrogation is also used to question witnesses or people who may be withholding information to protect others.

Under normal circumstance an interrogation will take place in a room with the interrogator sitting opposite the suspect (just like the movies!)  There may also another person in the room who is there to takes notes on what’s being said, or another interrogator in the room who can back up or take over from their colleague.  What is also just like the movies is the presence of voice recorders (and in some cases, video recorders) as these will be used as evidence in court if needed.

So, yes, we agree that there are similarities to the big screen version of events, but in most cases the interrogations are much less dramatic!

Coroner Fiona Wilcox said: “I am satisfied on the balance of probabilities that Gareth was killed unlawfully.  I am satisfied that a third party moved the bag containing Gareth into the bath”.

After the inquest, Williams’ family hit out at MI6 for failing to raise the alarm after the spy went missing, saying their grief had been “exacerbated” by the agency’s inaction.  John Sawyers, MI6 chief, has now apologised to Williams’  family, admitting that MI6 should have reported the 31-year-old’s absence from work more quickly.

The inquest heard that it could not be determined how the gifted mathematician had died because his body had been decomposing for approximately a week before being discovered.

Detective Chief Inspector Jackie Sebire from London’s Metropolitan Police issued this statement after the verdict was announced:  “I have always been satisfied that a third party may have been involved in his death, and the coroner has confirmed that in her findings.  The inquest has raised several new lines of inquiry and the investigation will now refocus.  I urge anyone who knew Gareth or who had contact with him to search their conscience and come forward.”

Pathologists said in evidence that Williams likely died from poisoning or suffocation.  The hearings were focused on whether Williams could have locked himself into the holdall as part of a lone sex act, after examination of his computer showed he had visited bondage websites.  But the coroner said it was “highly unlikely” that Williams could have got inside the bag alone and observed that the surfaces around the bath were strangely clear of any evidence.

Big Brother Steps It Up A Gear

It is reported that on two completely separate occasions while filming  Breaking Bad in New Mexico, the actor was robbed.  The actor, who lives in New Mexico during the show’s production period, tweeted about the two robberies on his Twitter page.

Paul tweeted: “I’ve been robbed twice since I’ve been in ABQ shooting Breaking Bad.  First time was my car and this time around it was my house.  Can’t wait to be back in LA. It’s so much safer there.”

The tweets have now been removed from his page, but police reports this month have confirmed that Paul reported a laptop, voice recorders and sunglasses stolen from his home.

Paul later tweeted: “I love ABQ and the people.  Just felt violated and super sad to lose personal items from my home.”

It is not known whether the laptop, voice recorder and sunglasses were later recovered and returned to the actor.

“Put me in uniform, send me to Ireland and make me a spy,” he is reported to have asked US President at the time Franklin D Roosevelt.  He wrote this in a letter to Col Bill Donovan, head of the CIA and it was then passed onto President Roosevelt.

Professor Tony Emmerson (former head of American Studies at Ulster University) discovered the letter at the Presidential Library in New York.  He said: “Flynn suggests he be put in army uniform, sent to Ireland and that, effectively, he become a spy.  He suggests that because he is so famous and engaging, people will talk to him and they’ll be indiscreet.  “He writes that Brigid O’Toole (the typical Irish woman) has only the vaguest idea whether the Panama Canal divides America or Africa but she does know ‘without a shadow of a doubt that Clark Gable cherishes a marked antipathy to striped underwear and that Hedy Lamarr wears a false bust’.  Irish people are so mad about movies they will engage with Errol Flynn the great Hollywood actor and speak loosely.”

But his offer of covert skills fell on deaf ears and his letter was not received very well by Roosevelt.  The president knew Flynn vaguely and believed that he had Nazi sympathies before the war, so he didn’t trust him!

Several years before his naked body was discovered in a padlocked bag at his home, MI6 spy Williams tied himself to his bed’s headboard and had to be cut free by his landlords in the middle of the night.  His landlord recalled that Williams was “embarrassed, panicky and apologetic” and he tried to explain to them that he had been trying to see if he could escape.  There were no other strange incidents reported by the landlord and he and his wife never spoke of it to anyone but each other.

Williams’s body was found padlocked inside a holdall in the bath at his Pimlico flat on 23rd August 2010.  Police who entered the flat to investigate his disappearance found £20,000 worth of designer women’s clothing and accessories.  None of his MI6 spy equipment was discovered at the apartment.

A staff member of  a London designer store recalled him coming in regularly and buying women’s items he claimed were for his girlfriend.

The inquest continues.

A spurned lover decided to set up a web cam in order to spy on his ex-partner as she undressed at home.  Jilted David Cummings got his kicks out of filming ex-girlfriend Susan Gascoigne as she got in and out of the shower and changed clothes.

Cummings, 44, was living with 42-year-old Gascoigne for fifteen years before their relationship came to an end in 2010.  They continued to share their home for financial reasons but lived separate lives – both even beginning relationships with new partners.  Cummings though was secretly obsessed with his ex-girlfriend’s every move and set up the spy equipment to view her most private moments, even in the bathroom.  Cummings hid the sordid web cam in a music speaker in a spare room, used by his ex as a dressing room as it had an en-suite shower, and secretly filmed her.

When the hidden body-worn spy cameras was finally discovered, police arrested Cummings immediately.  But this wasn’t as bad as it could get for Cummings because, when police raided his home, they also found a stash of child pornography on his computers too.

Cummings told the arresting officers that he had initially set up the camera to eavesdrop on his ex-partner but admitted he got a kick out of seeing her undress.  Police seized computers belonging to Cummings and found the voyeuristic videos stored on them, some over an hour long.  They also uncovered a collection of pornographic images and films of children.

In court, Cummings admitted six charges of possessing indecent images of children, one of possessing indecent films, and three counts of voyeurism.  He was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for two years.  The judge also ordered Cummings to complete 200 hours of community work and remain under supervision for two years.  In addition, he will pay £1,200 costs, as well as compensation to his victim, and will be on the sex offenders’ register for seven years.

A total of seven Boeing Sentry E3D aircraft have now been taken out of service as a precautionary measure immediately following the discovery of the fault during a routine inspection.  The fleet are based at RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire, and it is their duty to provide early warning and fighter control systems for the military.

In a statement confirming that these aircraft had been taken out of service temporarily, the Ministry of Defence also reassured the public that there would be no loss of cover on the surveillance equipment front as they had other aircraft available to take over the role.  A spokeswoman stated:  “A routine inspection on an E3D aircraft at RAF Waddington has revealed a technical issue with one of the in-service aircraft.  Routine E3D operations have been temporarily suspended pending further engineering investigation.  There is no loss of operational capability.”

Only a few months ago the Defence Secretary, Phillip Hammond, flew on board one of the fleet as the RAF practised security cover ahead of the Olympics.

When following your target, make sure to keep a good distance between you.  If you are following someone on an open street, don’t be tempted to get too close or follow them into a location where you might be seen such as a small area.  Make good use of natural reflection from bus shelters and shop windows so you never look directly at them.  This is a good way of using your surroundings to your advantage.  Everything from lamp posts to telephone boxes will shield you from your target.

Don’t underestimate the power of spy devices to help you – they really do make spying easier.  You can keep up with your suspect with vehicle tracking devices, rather than following them everywhere on foot.  Secret cameras and well-placed voice recorders will allow you to capture data to confront your target at a later date.

Williams, aged 31, worked as a GCHQ codebreaker on secondment to MI6.  A source close to Williams has now claimed that he thought he was being followed in the days before his death.

Not a lot is known about this mystery man in the holdall, or about the company he kept at his Pimlico flat where he was found dead.  It is widely speculated that his death came about because of his secret life as a spy shop, perhaps as a revenge killing, or a way to keep him quiet about something he may have seen.

There are also questions about his private life as various items of women’s clothing were found in his flat, yet with no woman living there.  Could his death have been caused by a sex game which went very wrong?  It is accepted that he couldn;t possibly have padlocked himself into the holdall so another party must have been involved at some point – but was this an enemy or a lover?  There are so many question which remain about this very bizarre death.

No spy equipment was found at Williams’ flat, indeed many of his close acquaintances did not know the nature of his employment and this crucially is what being a good spy is all about.  He certainly got the secretiveness aspect of his job right, but did he then take risks in his personal life to compensate?  Or did he indeed get sloppy and get discovered by enemy agents?  An inquest into his death hopes to reveal the answers to these questions…we’ll keep you posted.

The Secret Holdall

Tenant will star alongside Merlin actress Janet Montgomery in the new BBC Four show The Spies Of Warsaw, which is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Alan Furst.  We expect plenty of undercover action and spy gadgets galore, including voice recorders, code writing and a few clever weapons thrown in for good measure too.

Tenant’s character is lead into the murky world of espionage in the story which is set across different countries including Poland, Paris, London and Berlin, and is based in the years leading up to the outbreak of war.

A statement from BBC Four controller Richard Klein described the show as “a tense, passionate and sexy love story set against the increasingly strident clang of coming war.  Spies Of Warsaw is an entertaining, thrilling and insightful drama with a very different take on the Second World War, seen through the eyes of characters who know from the start that they and their fellow countrymen will face the brunt of the horrors to come: this is top class drama, and perfect for BBC Four.”

The Likely Lads writers have written some of the most popular British television shows of the last 40 years including Porridge and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.  This latest offering looks to continue their success.  Filming will begin next month in Poland.

Firstly, you need to use what you’ve already got and train your eyes and ears to look for anything out of the ordinary.  Take the time to go through the room that you are concerned about nice and slowly, looking out for items which are brand new, or seem out of place.  Once this is done, check for small holes in the objects around the room – especially books and electrical items, and particularly if they are positioned in a place which has a view of the entire room.  If your television or radio have suddenly become crackly, this could be due to the fact that they are picking up interference from electronic devices positioned in the room.  Also look for any loose ceiling panels or floorboards which could have been removed in order to place a recording device.  Try to get complete silence and then listen for any unusual ‘whirring’ sounds which could be coming from hidden spy equipment.

Once you have completed your visual check, you need to turn your attentions to your PC or laptop.  This is usually where you will store lots of personal information so it should always be password protected.  You can further your security by buying software to protect the contents of your PC or laptop, or even a keystroke device which will monitor if anyone is trying to access your computer in your absence.

In terms of personal security, anybody with surveiallnce on you will rely on your routine – so change it up every once in a while.  Vary your travel routes if possible and try not to always be in the same places at the same times.
