Pakistan Government Implement Karachi Surveillance Project
The Pakistan government has put together a multi-million dollar project entitled ‘Safe City Karachi’ which is designed to combat terrorism, amongst
other things.
They are aiming to fight crime and terrorism and even improve traffic monitoring by adding surveillance equipment throughout the city. The project will take two years to reach completion.
In the first year, 164 points around the city will have surveillance cameras installed, covering important areas such as around the airport. The cameras will feed through to a central point through underground fibre optic cables with a wireless back-up as well.
Control centres will also be set up, where the incoming video feeds will be automatically monitored using sophisticated video analytics software, such as number plate recognition and the like.
Monitoring of sites will be carried out using fixed and panning, tilting, zooming cameras with day and night vision capabilities. The system will also allow gunshot detection through acoustic sensors.
All cameras will also have power backup through a power source installed on the same pole on which the camera is mounted. This backup will last for around 10 or 12 hours.
